Facebook unveils speedier app for iPhone, iPad
“We just released a new Facebook app for iPhone and iPad and it’s a lot faster. Our team completely rewrote it from the ground up to focus on speed. It’s a big step forward.” said Mark Zuckerberg on his Facebook page.
On Thursday, Facebook Inc. addressed the app problems of iPhone and iPad users with the launch of a faster version of this app. As Mark said, the company rewrote the entire code from scratch instead of tweaking it here and there.
This upgrade has received a lot of thumbs up, with pages and comments loading much faster and also that users can now “like” photos, which was not available in the previous version.
This app is based on native iOS code, Objective-C, primarily for the sake of speed. This is another example of how HTML5 initially an over hyped web language has been sidelined.
Not to forget initially Facebook engineering manager David Recordon in early 2011 was quoted as saying ” We have high hopes for HTML5 and have already begun to use it in our products. We hope HTML5 will help developers everywhere address one significant engineering challenge we face daily: the need to support different platforms across the Web, desktop and mobile devices.”
In addition to this, Facebook has also benefited from the updated code. As explained by Dann, this has brought in place a infrastructure, in the sense that the computationally intensive tasks as taken care in the back end, tier 2. This gives more space for the UI and other interactions more effectively.
Although Facebook had not addressed what aspects of HTML 5 slowed down its previous version, but one reason can be attributed to Apple not Facebook.A web content in an iOS app is developed using the UIWebView element. But Apple uses a Nitro JavaScript engine does not allow the UIWebView access it for security precaution. This is supposed to accelerate the processing of JavaScript. Because of this Facebook’s old iOS app processed JavaScript more slowly that a Web App viewed through other mobile OS like safari.
By the launch of this new app,Facebook will be relieved off the pressure of being able to hold the social network work on the mobile devices as much as on desktop computers.
